In recent years, the number of visitors to Japan has increased dramatically, leading to growing concerns over overtourism. One of the most significant challenges is visitor etiquette. Due to cultural differences, many first-time visitors may find it difficult to understand certain unspoken rules and expectations in Japan.
To address this, Kodansha launched an initiative titled “MANGA MANNERS”, using internationally renowned manga characters to create engaging advertisements that teach essential etiquette for traveling comfortably in Japan. These tips cover everyday situations, including dining in restaurants and using public transportation.
Additionally, JR has been distributing leaflets compiling 17 essential manners into a single booklet at major stations such as Tokyo, Shinagawa, Kyoto, and Shin-Osaka, making it easier for visitors to learn and practice considerate behavior during their travels in Japan.
17 titles used for this advertising campaign: Akira, Fire Force, Cardcaptor Sakura, Parasyte, The Ghost in the shell, Shota no sushi, Skip and loafer, Chiikawa something small and cute, Tokyo revengers, The seven deadly sins, Pretty guardian sailor moon, Attack on titan, Gambling apocalypse: KAIJI, Cells at work!, Fairy tail, Blue lock, Medalist.
